Two lonely souls on separate journeys, sometimes crossing paths but never once meeting. Nothing happens between them. There is no story.
The 10th installment of Tsai Ming-liang’s Walker series, commissioned by the National Museum, ABIDING NOWHERE, follows Tsai’s muse and long time collaborator, Lee Kang-sheng out of the woods and through bustling streets, subways, and museums of Washington DC. Inspired by the Tang-dynasty Buddhist monk Xuanzang, who famously walked from China to India in search of scriptures, the Walker series is the culmination of a career. Whittled down to the most essential image and movement, Tsai Ming-liang has reached his purest aesthetic expression yet.
The first Walker piece to be filmed in the United States, ABIDING NOWHERE also stars Anong Houngheuangsy, who is on his own path, complicating and complementing the Walker’s with the daily activities of a modern working class citizen. The two never intersect, they never meet, but the organization of walking brings to mind themes throughout Tsai’s career– the isolation of city life, cruising and meditation.
