One of the dazzling high points of wuxia fantasy cinema, the generically titled BASTARD SWORDSMAN mixes bizarre, superheroic martial-arts action with elements of the mystical and phantasmagorical to create the perfect Friday night Hong Kong cinema cocktail.
Based on a popular '70s TV series called REINCARNATED (aka THE TRANSFORMATION OF THE HEAVENLY SILKWORM), the film follows the plight of Yun Fei Yang (Norman Chu), a lowly servant at the Wu Tang martial-arts school who is bullied and looked down upon by the other students. Secretly taught kung-fu skills by a mysterious master, he must sacrifice almost everything to learn the “Silkworm Style” — which makes him a veritable “Spider-Swordsman” — and then does battle with a villain so martially adept that he can fight while seated in a flying throne. BASTARD SWORDSMAN is many things, but boring is definitely not one of them!
