CAPE FEAR is what happens when Martin Scorsese remakes a respectable black-and-white thriller and feeds it a bucket of fireworks.

Sam Bowden is a small-town corporate attorney. Max Cady is a tattooed, cigar-smoking, bible-quoting, psychotic rapist. What do they have in common? Fourteen years, ago Sam was a public defender assigned to Max Cady’s rape trial, and he made a serious error: he hid a document from his illiterate client that could have gotten him acquitted. Now, the cagey, bibliophile Cady has been released, and he intends to teach Sam Bowden and his family a thing or two about loss.

Featuring a particularly nasty performance by Robert De Niro as a tattooed revenge machine, chewing scenery (and people) opposite a cast featuring Nick Nolte, Jessica Lange, and Juliette Lewis. A key scene arrives on the Fourth of July. While fireworks explode overhead and patriotic imagery floods the screen, Cady drifts through the celebration like a shark wearing human clothing. That’s the movie’s whole sick joke. America is celebrating freedom while this family realizes they are no longer free anywhere: not at work, not at home, not in public, not even under a sky exploding red, white, and blue.
