But within two minutes, it’s obvious that there’s nothing “simple” about DEEP RED at all. This revolutionized the classy, ultra-violent sub-genre known as giallo into a self-reflexive nightmare of blood-soaked witnessing as Argento emphasizes the relentlessness of the cinematic gaze and the importance of “looking” in order to get at supreme truth.
