Legendary renegade horror-maker J.R. Bookwalter - who began his career in 1985 at age 19 with the unprecedentedly ambitious homemade Super-8mm blast of zombie grue known as THE DEAD NEXT DOOR - comes to the Beacon Cinema to present the Seattle premiere of his first new film in over twenty years! Join us for this special night including a double-feature of Bookwalter's masterpiece OZONE alongside his latest onslaught SIDE EFFECTS MAY VARY - a rare like-he-never-left late-career triumph of practical splatter!

OZONE (1994)
Eddie Boone is a cop with problems. Namely, his city is overrun with zombies, his partner has gone missing, and he was recently injected with a new street drug called Ozone. Is Boone doomed, or is he just a pawn in the plans of the mysterious cult known as the New Order?! Written and directed by home video trailblazer Bookwalter, OZONE is the action-horror-peyote wonderland of your wildest dreams . . . and the most ambitious shot-on-video movie of the 1990s. Dropping somewhere between HELLRAISER, THE TWILIGHT ZONE, and bronze age X-MEN comic books, OZONE is chock-full of rubber beastoids, hallucinogenic visuals, and inspiring DIY spirit -- everything you need out of life.

“A low-budget triumph on every technical level. But, there is one element that propels this film from great to greatest: the kingpin. He looks exactly like Jabba the Hutt strung out on every single drug available at CVS, including the birth control pills and the morning-after pills. Bookwalter’s genius shines bright here. OZONE gushes. It oozes. It explodes. It squirts. It jiggles. It literally bursts into flames. Bookwalter throws in every single effect culled from his exhaustive archive of DIY horror magazines and books. There are legitimately dangerous explosions, chunky gore, rivers of blood, latex masks laden with moist warts, monster transformations, zombie make-up effects, and a punk with a Mohawk made from a circular saw blade. THIS IS A MOVIE WHERE A DIRECTOR LITERALLY MADE EVERYTHING OUT OF NOTHING. - Annie Choi, Bleeding Skull

SIDE EFFECTS MAY VARY (2024)
The fictional story of a world gripped by a deadly pandemic, as science-denier Glenn Rollins turns to an experimental vaccine as treatment for a lingering sickness. Much to the surprise of his doctor, wife, and friends, the remedy immediately fixes what ails him. But Glenn will soon discover the only thing more fatal than the virus... is the cure.

“Everything I wanted it to be. It was hilarious, it was disgusting, it was exciting. SIDE EFFECTS MAY VARY feels like an extension of those great '90s Tempe movies that we all love so fucking much.” - James Kelly
