Inspired by the runaway success of the British and American gothic horror films of the sixties, Toho studios brought the bloodthirsty tropes of the vampire legend to Japanese screens under the direction of Akira Kurosawa’s former assistant Michio Yamamoto. Producing a trilogy of narratively-unrelated films with the same cast and crew, Yamamoto refined his approach to atmospheric perfection with the final entry, EVIL OF DRACULA.
In this cartoonishly lurid goth ballad, a professor takes up a new post at an all-girls school only to discover that the school's principal is concealing a dark secret and the pupils are in grave danger. Abounding with images of dark thunderous nights, foreboding forests, ghostly mansions and bloody fangs, this kaleidoscopic creepshow delivers everything you could ask for from a ‘70s vampire film, including rampant flute playing, boob-biting and huge sideburns. A favorite of the great Kiyoshi Kurosawa, this movie feels as comforting as slipping into a perfect custom coffin and closing the lid.
