GREMLINS
1984
Don’t get him wet, keep him out of bright light, and never NEVER feed him after midnight. When Billy Peltzer is given a strange but adorable pet named Gizmo for Christmas, he inadvertently breaks the three important rules of caring for a Mogwai, and unleashes a horde of mischievous gremlins on a small town. Cartoon crazy and movie mad, genuinely insurrectionary but also quaint enough that multiple characters refer to things as "neat," GREMLINS is a perfect smirking Looney Tunes subversion of sentimental Americana. The best family Christmas movie that also features child death!
"Capital eats itself...on Christmas. Complete with one of the most merchandise-ready characters ever put on film. That the concept - turn the Spielbergian ethos upside down and release everything that's violent and awful about it - is animated by Dante with complete anarchic glee. How something this nasty became so popular is one of the 80s' biggest mysteries." - Filipe Furtado
