Mad with grief over the deaths of his wife and daughter, a composer played by a maximum-intensity George C. Scott decides to retire from the world into an ominous, remote mansion—but he’s got company, in the form of a murdered child’s restless spirit. Based on recorded supernatural incidents at the Henry Treat Rogers Mansion in Denver, Peter Medak’s gracefully shot, relentlessly atmospheric film is one of the most spine-tinglingly effective haunted house movies ever made, one sure to instill in new viewers a lifelong fear of self-propelling wheelchairs and rubber balls.

“A very gracefully-stylized haunted house movie with impeccable control over its eerie, lonely, grief-stricken atmosphere. so many fantastic slow zooms, shadowy corridor compositions, creepy handheld POV tracking shots, and Victorian architecture observed in beautiful and strange wide-angle, overhead images. All of this further complimented by the intentionally quiet, windy sound design and spare piano score that has this ghostly twinkling lullaby quality to it emphasizing the feelings of emptiness and loss. Really spectacular feel-bad revenge climax as well.” - Josh Lewis

(This movie commits the common sin of shooting in Vancouver and presenting it as Seattle, but there ARE some bits shot in the glorious Emerald City!)
