The Old Oak is a special place. Not only is it the last pub standing in its small northern town, but it’s also the only remaining public space where people can meet in a once thriving mining community that has now fallen on hard times after 30 years of decline. Its owner TJ Ballantyne (Dave Turner) hangs on to The Old Oak by his fingertips, and his predicament is endangered even more when the pub becomes contested territory after the arrival of Syrian refugees who are placed in the village without any notice. In an unlikely friendship, TJ meets a curious young Syrian photographer named Yara (Ebla Mari). Together can they find a way for the two communities to understand each other? So unfolds a deeply moving drama about their fragilities and hopes.

The latest and likely final film from director Ken Loach and screenwriter Paul Laverty, THE OLD OAK is characteristically forthright in its imagery and plain-spoken in its messaging. This is filmmaking driven by anger, empathy and unquenched idealism. The non-professional cast bring an unpolished honesty to a work brimming with moments of blistering power.

“In place of magical thinking and happy endings, THE OLD OAK serves up something harder: a meditation on hope.” - Alissa Wilkerson, New York Times

“It's as engrossing, thoughtful, heartfelt, angry, hopeful, and altogether valuable as his best work. If it is indeed Loach's farewell, it's one hell of a fine note to go out on.” - Matt Zoller-Seitz, RogerEbert.com

THE OLD OAK is a fitting final call for solidarity from a filmmaker who has stood steadily with the poor, downtrodden and deprived all through with his remarkable body of work.” - Namrata Joshi, The New Indian Express

The proceeds from the screening on Wednesday, May 15 will be donated to Long Haul Mutual Aid. Long Haul volunteers cook 120 fresh meals every Sunday and deliver them to unsheltered folks in Georgetown and SODO, along with other essential supplies such as water, harm reduction, clothes, hygiene products, batteries, etc. Long Haul also hosts a propane exchange every Thursday where folks can get their propane tanks filled up for free. ✨Solidarity not charity✨
