Completed in 1992, TOMCAT’S BIG ADVENTURE was supposed to be the theatrical feature debut of Ryūtarō Nakamura, best known now as the director of SERIAL EXPERIMENTS LAIN and KINO’S JOURNEY. Five years in the making, it involved a dizzying array of legends from the animators to the voice actors and sound design. But when the movie’s production company went bankrupt, plans to release it were shelved indefinitely. Its theatrical run never happened, only screening in a few small, local venues before vanishing entirely. Even animators in the industry often hadn’t heard of the film and it became a phantom project—“something so fantastic, rare and mysterious that its very existence has come into question.”
Now the film has been rescued from oblivion and our friends at Wamono Nights are bringing it to the Beacon!
The story follows Tom, a young cat, and his friends embarking on a fun summer adventure to save the planet earth. Good stuff! Filled with unbelievably lush animation and a perfect sense of childlike whimsy, TOMCAT’S BIG ADVENTURE is a major anime rediscovery!
