Oliver Stone's NATURAL BORN KILLERS is an all-out assault on the American appetite for violence, made with the manic enthusiasm of a man who appears to share it. Woody Harrelson and Juliette Lewis are Mickey and Mallory Knox, a pair of homicidal lovers whose cross-country killing spree turns them into national celebrities, aided by a television industry that has finally discovered the perfect marriage of entertainment and mass murder. Stone attacks the material with an almost psychotic barrage of film stocks, animation, rear projection, sitcom laugh tracks, and hallucinatory editing, creating a movie that seems to be having a nervous breakdown in front of your eyes. Released at the height of the O.J. Simpson era, NATURAL BORN KILLERS was condemned as an irresponsible glorification of violence by people who apparently hadn't noticed what the rest of American television was broadcasting. Thirty years later, its vision of a country where murder is content, notoriety is currency, and the public can't get enough of either feels considerably less exaggerated than it once did.
