THE NIGHT THEY ALL CAME OUT OF THEIR COFFINS AT ONCE: MONSTER CROSSOVERS, TEAM-UPS & PILE-UPS
There comes a point in every monster’s life when terror is no longer enough. Bro needs some friends.
THE NIGHT THEY ALL CAME OUT OF THEIR COFFINS AT ONCE celebrates the monster movie’s irresistible urge to empty the whole toybox: monsters meeting monsters, monsters fighting monsters, monsters teaming up with monsters, and monsters piling into the frame until the movie can barely contain them.
What begins with the fateful collision of FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE WOLFMAN and reaches comic perfection in ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN soon mutates into stranger forms: A mexican masked rider battling an army of supernatural horrors, Jess Franco throwing Dracula and Frankenstein together with characteristically little regard for good taste or natural law, and Franco Brocani’s NECROPOLIS turning the monster mash into a psychedelic procession of history’s witches, vampires, murderers and damned souls. A Greek underground Dracula wanders anarchist Athens, Rankin/Bass invites every creature in the catalog to one MAD MONSTER PARTY, and SPOOKIES assembles a bestiary so indiscriminate that even a roomful of farting mud monsters makes the guest list.
Eight films where the monsters can’t simply wait their turn. Dracula! Frankenstein! The Wolf Man! The Mummy! Witches! Skeletons! Zombies! Wrestlers! Puppets! Demons! Mutants! Abbott! Costello! And several things science has yet to successfully identify!
The crypt is open. Everybody’s invited.
